Depression is caused by a variety of factors. It can by biological, genetic, physical and emotional. Simple daily life and surroundings are important. Stress and other negative influences have been known to contribute. Complicated diseases like depression aren't easy to crack. We also recognize the intricacy of man's mind.

The British Heart Foundation is investigating how depression and stress damages blood vessels, thus resulting in a higher risk of suffering from heart disease. Heart disease remains the biggest killer in the US and the UK. A team at the University of Wales College of Medicine is looking into the theory that our body's inability to cope with stress and depression may be contributing to the onset of heart disease.

Based on the intensity of the disease condition, depression medication is classified in two main categories: Acute medication and Continuation medication. These depression medications are used to treat any one of the three types of depression symptoms, like severe depression, moderate depression and mild depression. For each type of those symptoms, there is a defined treatment or medication, which works better with a clinical efficiency.

All of those types of depression medication have many commonalities with regards to their mode of action. They all work by increasing the level of neurotransmitters in the brain. MAOIs do this by inhibiting the enzymatic breakdown of neurotransmitters serotonin and norepinephrine trough monoamine oxidase; TCAs prevent the uptake of various neurotransmitters such as dopamine, serotonin and norepinephrine; and SSRIs and SNRIs, as their name implies, selectively prevent the reuptake of specific neurotransmitters.

Many depressed and anxious people may need medication for an indefinite period. This is the case when the depression is recurrent, when a chronic mild depression is complicated by episodes of severe depression, when there is a strong family history for depression, or when the stressful situation is not expected to end.

The medicines classified as SSRI are the following: Paxil (paroxetine), Lexapro (escitalopram oxalate), Zoloft (sertraline), Luvox (fluvoxamine) and Prozac (fluoxetine). Yet another one is Celexa (citalopram). The side effects recorded for this type of depression medication include erectile dysfunction, anxiety and restlessness, hostility, agitation, dizziness, nausea, insomnia, tremors, sweating, drowsiness, fatigue, either diarrhea or constipation, headaches, dry mouth and either weight gain or loss.

There are many different types of medications that can be used for depression. Many have associated side effects, though it can be hard to tell if a given person will suffer from those side effects. Anti-depressants can help people who suffer from severe or chronic depression, but you should always pay attention to your prescription. If you feel that your medication has little effects on you, then you may require a change in dosage.
